I Started a Joke

I Started A Joke is book cover animation. I was assigned to select a book cover from a specific time period and reinterpret it through animation. I chose Alcoholism by Neil Kessel, drawn to its bold, graphic 1960s design and strong visual structure. The animation required pairing the cover with a song from the same era, and I selected I Started a Joke by Bee Gees.

Rather than animate the cover literally, I interpreted the lyrics as a metaphor for alcoholism. The feeling of thinking everyone is laughing with you, until you realize they’re not anymore. As the song progresses, the animation reflects a loss of controland the unraveling of stability and self-awareness.

This project challenged me to blend historical design, music, and narrative into one cohesive motion piece, using animation to express emotional descent and the quiet isolation that can come with addiction.
